Tasman Revival
A Celebration Of Four Decades Of Motor Racing At The 2008 Repco Tasman Revival
The 2008 Repco Tasman Revival, to be held at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway from November 28 to 30, will be a nostalgic re-enactment of trans-Tasman motorsport competition that took place some 40 years ago.
In the swinging sixties, Australia and New Zealand had their own mini Formula One / single seater type of race series known as the TASMAN SERIES. Almost all the Formula One Teams and drivers came to Australia and New Zealand to enjoy some motor racing fun in the sun during the northern hemisphere's winter. The cars were the Formula One cars of the era and the engines were limited to a maximum of 2.5 litres.
To put the Tasman Series into perspective, it would be like Ferrari, McLaren, Honda, Renault, Red Bull, Williams and their star drivers calling Australia and New Zealand home for ten weeks over summer to contest eight races, four of which would be in Australia and four in NZ.
The race meetings of the 1960s Tasman Series included racing for all the current 1960s motor racing categories as well, such as sports cars, sedans and other formula / open wheeler cars. The 2008 Repco Tasman Revival meeting replicates these meetings by including all of the categories currently competing in Historic Racing.
The inaugural Tasman Revival was held in December 2006 and it attracted some 400 entries, with 22 of them transporting their precious race machines all the way from the UK, USA, Hong Kong and NZ. In 2008, the phenomenally powerful Formula 5000's will be added to the Tasman Revival Formula cars, along with production sedans, production sportscars, sports-racing cars and other forms of single seaters including Formula Junior, Formula Ford and Formula Atlantic which were also featured in the 2006 programme.
According to Repco Marketing Manager Melinda Wood, Repco is delighted to be involved with this iconic historic racing event. "Repco has been intrinsically involved in motor racing in both Australia and New Zealand throughout the last five decades and it makes sense for us to present such a popular event that celebrates the glory days of the Tasman Series. The use of our logo of the era also fits in very well with the event. We hope that all Australian historic motor racing fans can be a part of this exciting event."
